Double-glazing has revolutionised home insulation in the UK over the past 40 years. The transition from single-glazed to double-glazed units marked a significant leap in thermal and acoustic insulation capabilities. The inception of double glazing dates back to the 1870s, but it wasn’t until 1930 in the US that the modern double-glazed window emerged. In the UK, stricter building regulations were introduced in 1965 and the oil crisis of 1973, which led to a maximum U-value of 1.8 for windows, catalysed the widespread adoption of double glazing in the 1970s and 1980s. Now, it’s a standard feature in new homes.
Since April 2002, compliance with Building Regulations for replacement glazing has been mandatory, ensuring standards for thermal efficiency, safety, and ventilation. Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), introduced in 2007, rate properties from A to G and provide recommendations for enhancing energy efficiency. Measures like upgrading to double or triple glazing significantly improve a property’s energy rating.
In April 2018, a new standard was set, requiring all private rental properties to have a minimum energy rating of E. Upgrading from single-glazed to double-glazed units is an effective way to meet this requirement, enhance a property’s warmth, and reduce heating costs.
We’re looking for show homes that have undergone transformations, particularly those that have replaced standard double-glazed windows with A-rated units. We aim to visually document these changes through before-and-after photos, highlighting the aesthetic and practical improvements. This will not only demonstrate the effectiveness of A-rated double glazing in enhancing energy efficiency and reducing costs but also inspire others to consider similar upgrades.
